This song by The White Stripes is one of their biggest hits and like many of their songs, the drumming is relatively simple. That makes it a fun and easy song for any beginner drummer to learn. In the lesson at Simpledrummer.com, I break down the drum parts that Meg White plays as well as the structure of the song itself. It features a well known guitar riff that repeats throughout the entire song and interestingly enough, makes a great chorus without any lyrics sung over it at all. The drumming in Seven Nation Army is mainly based on a 1/4 note rhythm played with the feet and Floor Tom. When the riff kicks into full blast with what would be the chorus, the groove moves to the cymbals. In this part of the song, the drums match the guitar riff by playing a triplet rhythm. I respect all people on both sides of the argument and I want everyone to feel respected..however our children dont need to be taught this in the classroom. It is an adult-rated political topic that has been fast-tracked into the classroom. Every kid questions their sexuality at one point or another, but the minute you prey on our childrens innocence, insecurities and self-identity, I cant stay silent. When we dont play the middle note of each triplet, we get the shuffle rhythm. This is one the best songs for beginners to start playing shuffle beats. Rock Me Baby is a 12-bar blues, which is a song cycle. That means that the entire song is the same 12-bar chord progression that repeats. It is important to get to know this structure and how it sounds. This song is very simple to play and easy to hear the blues progression. Clocks is a great song to learn on the drums because it has an unusual groove pattern. The groove pattern locks in with the piano riff which is what makes this song so recognizable. This is a fantastic example of how a drummer often keeps a kick/snare pattern consistent the whole way through a song. He uses the cymbals to create dynamics and intensity throughout the song.
