Want a song that will challenge you and make you feel good? Today we'll play James Brown's biggest hit, "I Got You (I Feel Good)". His music shaped what later became known as funk music. This song has been featured in many movies and on television so there's a good chance that you've heard it, even if you don't know who James Brown is.
There are a number of prolific drummers that have come into the spotlight through James Brown's band. This song features Melvin Parker, brother of the alto saxophonist Maceo Parker. He was one of the earlier drummers to play with James Brown. He was later replaced by the famous Clyde Stubblefield.
This song is super fun to play but you have to be an 1/8th note boss because the tempo is quite fast and there are a lot of rhythms to hit with the band. In the lesson at simpledrummer.com, I break down each section of the song and we practice them individually. You can also download the PDF for the notation of the entire song. This one's fast, funky and fun and guaranteed to make you feel good.
